Pay $1,800 a month on a car loan and every one of those payments shows up on your credit file. Pay $1,800 a month in rent, on time, for six straight years, and the file says nothing at all. You have proved you can make a large recurring payment better than most borrowers ever will, and none of it counted.
Rent reporting fixes that, and it has quietly become something you can get without paying for it.
What free reporting actually gets you
The service to look for furnishes your on time rent to all three bureaus, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, rather than one of them. Reporting to a single bureau is close to useless, because you have no control over which file a lender pulls.
Ask two questions before you switch anything on. First, does it report late payments? On a well built service the answer is no. Only on time payments are furnished, which means turning reporting on cannot damage your file. Second, does it back report? Some services will add up to 24 months of prior payment history where the paperwork supports it, and that is the difference between starting a credit trail today and having one that already goes back two years.
Six years of on time rent, invisible on your file, unless something is furnishing it.

Do not pay a fee to earn rewards
The other thing renters get offered is rewards, and this is where the money quietly leaks back out. A rewards program funded by a fee you pay is not a rewards program, it is a discount on a charge that did not need to exist.
Nopona handles this by putting the funder on the reward itself. Each one names who paid: your building, at a percentage the owner elects, or a merchant within walking distance running a cash back offer. Rewards arrive as Rent Credit, denominated in dollars rather than points, with no expiry, applied straight against the following month’s rent. Earning costs nothing.
The honest edge of that design is worth knowing about. If your landlord is outside the network, no funder exists, so the rent earns nothing and the app tells you so rather than handing you a token amount of a currency that expires before it is useful.
Merchant funded offers are limited to businesses a few blocks from the building, with walking minutes shown.
The short checklist
Before you route the largest payment of your month through anything, check four things. Rent goes to the landlord by bank transfer with no payment fee on the free tier. Reporting covers all three bureaus, on time payments only, at no cost, and switches off with one tap. There is a published guarantee with a stated remedy if a failure on their end causes you a late fee or an overdraft charge. And every stop in the payment is dated on screen, so you can see when it was scheduled, debited, delivered and confirmed.
Paid tiers exist and are optional. Membership runs $39 a year, or $4.99 a month, mainly for renters whose buildings are out of network or who split rent with roommates.
None of this is a substitute for paying down a balance or fixing a delinquency. It is simply the cheapest credit building move available to a renter, because you were making the payment anyway.
